I found it particularly interesting that Fitz included this statement by Nick at the moment that he did. Nick, Jordan, and Tom are on their way back from the city and Tom has just fought with Gatsby in the hotel room. Potential reasons for such a milestone to occur at this moment could be that the days of summer — comparable to young age and frivolity — are gone, and now it is time to face the tedium and trials of fall/winter, or old-age and responsibility.
